Abstract

Communication between nurses and patients is an integral part of the nursing process, ensuring quality care. In the modern nursing model, information and communication technologies are increasingly applied to provide accurate, timely exchange of information and facilitate smooth interaction with patients.
The aim – to assess communication between nurse and patient using information technologies.
Materials and methods. The study type was quantitative. A structured questionnaire was used to evaluate nurse-patient communication when utilizing information technologies. Questions were presented on a Likert scale. Using the Paniotto formula, the sample size was calculated to be 394 nurses. Data were collected in Lithuanian healthcare institutions, in various departments, by distributing anonymous paper questionnaires.
Results. Based on means and standard deviations, showed most respondents positively evaluated electronic medical records in nursing. They highlighted facilitated work processes and easy, anytime, anywhere access to information as key benefits. However, challenges included high costs, lack of computer skills, data security concerns, and reduced direct communication between specialists and patients. Respondents also noted advantages like improved quality of care, accessible patient information, and fewer data entry errors.
Conclusions. Most nurses positively assess the integration of technologies into nursing practice, as it contributes to increased work efficiency, ensures easy-to-understand system usage, and enables timely access to patient information regardless of workplace or time. The integration of technologies into nursing practice creates conditions for more effective nurse-patient communication, reduces data entry errors, and optimizes information processing. However, the implementation of technologies in nursing practice is limited by challenges such as high equipment costs, data security issues, and lack of information literacy, which may negatively affect direct nurse-patient communication.
